Lightsaber Color Meanings in Galactic Epics

In the vast expanse of interstellar mythology, the symbolism of lightsaber colors holds a profound significance. These radiant blades, wielded by the guardians of peace and justice, are not merely weapons but a reflection of the wielder's character, alignment, and spiritual connection. The crystal's color manifests when a Jedi or Sith forms a spiritual bond with it, shaping it into a proper lightsaber. This process imbues the weapon with a distinct color, each with unique symbolism and association.

Blue lightsaber: Represents righteousness and bravery, primarily by association with what the Jedi stand for and the user's strong “spiritual alignment” with the crystal. He was used by characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Count Dooku (before he fell to the Dark Side).

Purple lightsaber: Synonymous with Jedi Master Mace Windu. In Galaxy, it indicates moral ambiguity, uncertainty, and reconstruction, as purple combines red and blue. The purple lightsaber represents that its user shows an affinity with both the light and dark sides of the Force.

Green lightsaber: Associated with harmony, helpfulness, cooperation, spirituality, and demonstrable goodwill. Commonly used by wiser, senior Jedi, such as Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker.

Yellow lightsaber: Almost exclusively used by Jedi Temple guards, who carry double-bladed yellow lightsaber pikes. Other characters, such as Asajj Ventress and Ahsoka, have also wielded this lightsaber color at some point. Rey Skywalker wields a yellow lightsaber after defeating Palpatine at the end of the movie: The Rise Of Skywalker.

Orange lightsaber: One of the newer editions to Galaxy canon, featured as a selectable option in Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. In Galaxy Legends, the Sith and dark-aligned Jedi have sometimes used orange blades.

Red lightsaber: Iconically and unquestionably represent the Sith and the dark side. The process is known as “bleeding” and consists of pouring all their hate, fear, and other negative emotions into the crystal, causing it to “bleed” and turn red.

White lightsaber: Primarily used by Ahsoka Tano and are proof of her mastery of the Force. Ahsoka retrieved these special Kyber crystals from the lightsaber of the Sixth Brother, an Inquisitor she killed during the Imperial occupation of Raada. These originally emitted a red blade, but Ahsoka purified them with the use of the Force and restored them to a white color, representing her status as an autonomous individual.

Darksaber (Black lightsaber): A one-of-a-kind blade created several centuries before the Skywalker Saga by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi. Despite being a uniquely colored lightsaber, the Darksaber commands the respect of all Mandalorians.

Galaxy Jedi: Survivor Colors: The game includes three new canon lightsaber colors for Cal Kestis. These are cyan, indigo, and magenta. Not much is known about the canon significance of these colors or what they mean for their wielders.

The color of a lightsaber is determined by the kyber crystal used to create it. These crystals are found on Ilum and can only be mined by younglings. Once a cyber crystal is obtained, a Jedi or Sith must use Force to connect with the crystal and shape it into a proper lightsaber. The cyber crystal is then placed within the lightsaber’s hilt, serving as the weapon’s power source and focus.
